our values
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
The Artist Book Foundation (TABF) is committed to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. We embrace and value our differences, whether it be sexual orientation, gender identity, age, culture, ethnicity, or lived experiences. Encouraging an inclusive and diverse workplace gives TABF the advantage of understanding and meeting the needs of our unique communities.
We are actively engaged in a serious, organization-wide initiative that is examining each area of our operations to ensure our commitment is reflected in everything we do. We have established a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) advisory group that is working to assess current operations and programming, and will help to inform a new strategic plan. With the full support of our board of directors, we will incorporate DEIA principles as a core value in every phase of TABF’s planning for the future.
Every person deserves access to art. TABF has donated our publications to diverse communities, public and private schools, libraries, veterans’ rehabilitation centers, and prisons. We continue to identify other communities for book donations, such as shelters for women, youth LGBTQ+, and the homeless, as well as immigration centers.
Accessibility
TABF is honored to have been accepted into the Mass Cultural Council’s Universal Participation (UP) Innovation and Learning Network. The UP Initiative aims to fulfill the aspirations of the Americans with Disabilities Act by breaking down the barriers that prevent full civic participation in the Massachusetts cultural sector. TABF is proud to have participated in a rigorous 15-week learning program to understand better how innovation and technology can improve and enhance accessibility for all.
We are in the process of adding “alt text” to our website, a tenet of accessible web design. This new feature will help viewers with visual impairments or blindness enjoy the artwork on the website. The images are beautifully described and can be read by screen-reader software. View our Accessibility Page for what you can expect when you visit TABF’s gallery.
Card to culture program
We are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Massachusetts Health Connector, the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, and hundreds of cultural organizations across Massachusetts, by making all our events and programs free and open to the public. See the complete list of participating organizations offering EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare discounts.
Land Acknowledgement
With gratitude and humility, we acknowledge that our offices on the campus of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) are located on the ancestral homelands of the Muhheaconneok or Mohican peoples (People of the Waters That Are Never Still) and the peoples of the Wabanaki (People of the Dawnland) Confederacy. We honor and respect these ancestors’ past, present, and future as we commit to building a more inclusive and equitable space for all.
NON-DISCRIMINATION STATEMENT
At The Artist Book Foundation, we value all of our employees, job candidates, visitors, customers, and supporters as unique individuals, and we welcome the variety of experiences they bring to our organization. As such, we have a strict non-discrimination policy. We believe everyone should be treated equally regardless of race, sex, gender identification, sexual orientation, national origin, native language, religion, age, disability, marital status, citizenship, genetic information, pregnancy, or any other characteristic protected by law. If you feel discriminated against, please let a member of our staff know as soon as possible. Every complaint will be appropriately investigated.
